Hyderabad: Dalit rights organisations and Left parties have decided to hold a public meeting demanding the fulfilment of 14 demands on January 22 at Dharna Chowk, near Indira Park here. Speaking at a joint press conference held here on Thursday, former Chief Secretary Kaki Madhava Rao, State executive council members of CPI (M) and CPI G Nagaiah and CPI Gunda Mallesh, RPI State unit president Mahesh and others said that the collaboration of blue and red colours, representing the Dalit Right Organisations and Left Parties would be a historical movement for fighting for Dalit rights in the country.

Madhava Rao said that in the wake of several issues concerning atrocities against the Dalits in the country a nationwide agitation has been launched under the aegis of Dalit Swabhiman Sangharsh Samithi (DSSS) with a charter of demands. He said that protest programmes have been organised in Delhi and Bangalore and a public meeting is scheduled on January 22 here. It would be attended by former Members of Parliament and RPI National President Prakash Ambedkar, Rajya Sabha MP’s and CPM National President Sitharam Yechuri and National Secretary D Raja, former MP and CPI National General Secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy, Dalit Sthree President G Jhansi and others.

Effective implementation of SC and ST Atrocities Act, banning of Gau Rakshak’s and manual scavenging, distribution of three acres of land to Dalits, enactment of Rohith Act to end discrimination in the educational institutions, free KG to PG education for all, reservations in private sector and filling of backlog vacancies, strengthening of Public Distribution System (PDS) were among the other demands, he said.

Telangana CPM State executive member G Nagaiah stressed that the need for a united struggle was because of the increasing attacks on the dalits, minorities and others after BJP came to power at the Centre. The CPI State executive member Gunda Mallesh criticised the way police handled those present to mourn the first death anniversary of Rohith Vemula, a research scholar who allegedly committed suicide following the discrimination meted out by the university authorities last year.
