Hyderabad: Contrary to the statement made by Finance Minister Eatala Rajender in Assembly the BC Welfare Department on Friday clarified that there was no move to close down BC welfare hostels which have less than 50 students. The Minister was perhaps given a wrong briefing, the sources told The Hans India.

At present there are about 72,000 students in 460 Pre-matric and around 250 Post-matric welfare hostels under the BC welfare Department. The government recently came up with a new proposal to set up 119 residential schools exclusively for backward classes in the State.

The government has been proactively pursuing to increase the facilities and infrastructure for BC welfare educational institutions. Hence, there is no proposal to close down the hostels, said an official from the BC welfare hostels society.

However, the number of students has been dwindling in some BC welfare hostels located in remote areas. Some of the reasons for this decline in number of students is less number of BC population in such areas and students moving to mandal, constituency and district headquarters for better education.

It is against this backdrop that the demand for more number of BC hostels at mandal and district headquarters has been increasing. In addition to the existing BC hotels in quasi and urban areas, MLAs cutting across the party lines have been asking for two or more number of BC hostels.

In particular, demand for more BC hostels at mandal and assembly constituency levels have been growing, the official pointed out. Further, a five per cent fluctuation in the number of students joining and quitting hostels for various reasons from year to year happens normally and it does not warrant closing down of hostels.

Taking the low enrolment in BC hostels into view, the department is chalking out plans to propose to the government, to either merge the hostels with low enrolment with nearby BC welfare hostel in the area or, to convert them as residential schools by adding more facilities, the official clarified.
