Nagarkurnool: Women development in Nagarkurnool district has hit low as the officials of Rural Development Department not even disbursing Rs 6 crore to Self-Help Groups out of the target of Rs 19 crore for this financial year (2016-17).

During a meeting with the Rural Development officials, District Collector E Sridhar expressed his displeasure at the way the officials are working and directed them to draft an action plan to ensure that the targets of all welfare and development schemes in the district are met.

“The achievement figures clearly display your working report. The dismal results itself show that officials are not concentrating on the welfare of women. Even the recovery figures of just 88 per cent are not satisfactory,” the Collector said.

During the past one year, the Self-Help Groups in the district were distributed only Rs 6 crore out of the target of Rs 19 crore and the recovery is also only 88 per cent. The Collector warned the officials to ensure recovery of at least 98 percent or otherwise it would be presumed that they were not working properly.

“If the district has to prosper in all respects, then we must focus on women development. The women folk in the district are left far behind both socially and economically. Unless and until we concentrate on their upliftment, we cannot develop our district,” said the Collector while talking to the officials at the Praja Vaani on Tuesday.

The Collector said rural women were having no knowledge of various welfare and development schemes. He directed the officials to chart out an action plan in this regard and create more awareness among women in the district. “Officials must regularly visit villages and conduct meetings with villagers and bring a change in their mindset. Particularly, focus must be given to women development,” said the Collector.

Despite the district having water scarcity, with lift irrigation projects reaching their completion stage, almost all the major tanks are filled with water and this has helped the Fisheries and Marketing Department to flourish. However, though the district boasts of large livestock, the milk production is less than 1 lakh litres.

“We are targeting that by 2018 all the households in the district must have sanitation facilities and the roads and drainages should be renovated and reconstructed to ensure 100 per cent cleanliness,” said.
