​Hyderabad: Transport Minister P Mahender Reddy on Tuesday said that drivers should strive for zero accident rates.

Speaking at the 28th Road Safety Week celebrations of TSRTC at RTC Kala Bhavan on Tuesday, he said that the TSRTC has very good track record in regard to safety and all efforts should be made to further improve the image.

At the same time, he said that efforts should be made to bring the loss making corporation into profits. He said the government was ready to support the TSRTC and urged the staff to work with dedication to bring the corporation into profits.

RTC Chairman S Satyanarayana said that the accident rate in TSRTC was lowest in the country. G V Ramana Rao, Managing Director said that the RTC can now issue heavy motor vehicle driving license to the drivers.

He said that the government of India had allocated skill development centre to the corporation to train the drivers. After training, the corporation is authorised to give heavy motor vehicle driving license to the drivers, he said.

According to the officials, the RTC has 0.07 per cent of accident rate. There are 20,870 drivers out of the 50,000 staff and 25 per cent of the drivers were not involved in any accidents.

During 2014-15 there were 968 accidents and 380 deaths and during 2015-16 there were 827 accidents and 348 deaths, which show decrease in the accidents.

The State level award winning drivers include Md Rafi from Bhainsa depot who has a track record of zero accidents in his 33.2 years of service, S K Karimuddin of Karimnagar -2 depot with 32.11 years and Md Ibrahim of Mehdipatnam with 32.11 years of service. The drivers were given cash reward of Rs 12,000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 8,000 respectively.
