Failure of the biometric system to read the fingerprints of pensioners in Mahbubnagar, Wanaparthy, Nagarkurnool and Jogulamba Gadwal has left the poor senior citizens in the lurch

Mahbubnagar: With biometric machines failing to read the fingerprint of Aasara Pension beneficiaries, more than 19,000 senior citizens across four districts are denied pension for three months.

The apathy on the part of the officials in not integrating the biometric data base of all Aasara pension beneficiaries with the biometric scanning machines at 802 postal sub-centres across the four districts of Mahbubnagar, Wanaparthy, Nagarkurnool and Jogulamba Gadwal has left more than 19,000 beneficiaries in the lurch. All these poor beneficiaries, who are forced to run from pillar to post, are approaching the officials in the hope of getting their grievances resolved.

“I have not received my pension for the past three months. The officials are saying my details are not fed into the biometric machines. I don’t know whom to approach,” says an old age pension beneficiary from Narva Mandal.

Earlier, the pensioners used to get their pensions either from banks or directly from Panchayat Secretaries, however now the government has made it compulsory to disburse the pensions only through bank accounts after verifying the beneficiary details through biometric machines. With this the government has entrusted the postal department to disburse the pensions after verification through biometric fingerprint scanners.

“The integration of biometric data base with the fingerprints of of the beneficiaries has some minor issues which will be resolved very soon.

As an alternative to resolve the mismatch of the fingerprint temporarily, we are planning to deposit the pension amount of those, who are denied of pension because of glitch in biometric pension, in the account of Panchayat Secretary to be distributed to the beneficiaries in the next two to three days,” according to Katta Damador Reddy, Project Director, DRDA Mahbubnagar.
