Khammam: At last, there is a ray of hope in the lives of people of Yellanna Nagar who languished in darkness for more than two-and-a-half decades, dreading to venture out because of snakes and scorpions. Finally, the long wait of the Yellanna Nagar for power supply comes to an end.

The people are jubilant over basking under the light of electric lamps. The village has been energised on Sankranti Day thanks to the efforts of Wyra legislator Banoth Madan Lal.

In 1993, a group of people from the district practising ‘podu’ (shifting cultivation) settled down under the limits of Gubbagurti panchayat. They named their settlement as Yellanna Nagar.

At dusk, they would withdraw to the safety of their homes since the settlement has no power supply. At night, snakes, scorpions and mosquitoes will become active in the area because it is surrounded by trees, bushes and hillocks.

The village has the dubious distinction of losing 20 of its residents to snake-bite. The villagers petitioned all the concerned from the sarpanch to the MLA seeking power supply, but of no use. When they resolved to their fate,

The Hans India and HMTV reported their plight. Youth of the village narrated their bleak marriage prospects and quoted the instances of some housewives deserting their spouses not willing to live in the darkness.

The villagers have to travel at least 5 km to Gubbagurti to get their mobile phones charged. The media reports put the official machinery into motion, while a moved Wyra legislator Banoth Madan Lal took the matter to the notice of officials from District Collector to that of the Chief Minister and succeeded in getting the village energised.

The energy department energised the village on Sankranti Day lighting up the faces of villagers. Streets lamp poles have been installed and power supply to homes will be given in about a week.

Residents of Yellanna Nagar Lal Miya, Rajamma, Sundaraiah in lauded The Hans India and HMTV in getting their chronic problem resolved. Wyra MLA has a special word of appreciation for the two media units. He vowed to resolve all the problems of the village in future.
