Hyderabad: Power consumption in the State this year has gone up in January as compared to last year. It has already crossed the 160 MU mark on Wednesday. The demand is rising particularly from agriculture sector.

This is much higher than the consumption on the same day last year. The consumption on January 25 was 129 MUs . The unrestricted peak demand was 6,138 MW on January 25 last year, and it was 8,329 MW on the same day this year.

In terms of MWs the demand is 2191 MW more than the previous year. Demand for power was between 150 MUs and 158 MUs since the beginning of this year.

It has shot up to 162 MUs on Wednesday indicating more demand for power as the summer is yet to begin which would lead to rise in consumption in the domestic sector.

The officials have attributed rise in power consumption to such a huge demand in the last week of January due to agriculture operations. This year the more area was covered under agriculture operations during the rabi season this year as compared to last year.

Power distribution companies had been forced to buy about 450 MW of power to meet the demand on hourly basis on Wednesday. Recently they had called tenders for supply of about 1,250 MW of power on the short-term basis and it would be available from next month.
