Hyderabad: “Come January 27, people should not talk from 6 am to 7 pm and observe Mouni Amavasya (silent moonless day) to avoid disastrous consequences,” several astrologers warned people frightening them to the core. January 27 came and passed off peacefully with the least number of people adhering to the warning. It is evident that very few people took these predictions seriously.

One of the astrologers, Srinivasa Gargeya, gave a different timing to keep silence at least 10 am to 12.30 pm for reasons better known to him. It is not clear why he gave some relaxation to the timing. Moreover, he is not available to talk to him over the subject.

Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev even went one step ahead saying that it would be better to keep silence from the day of Mouni Amavasya till the day of Maha Sivaratri. Noticeably, he has been selected recently for Padma Vibhushan.

The social media did not take the Mouni Amavasya kindly. A number of posts in the Facebook mocked at the so-called astrologers who warned people from talking on that day. Most of them even invited everyone with the slogan “Come Let’s Talk on Jan 27”. Many people posted with the logo “I am not scared of Mouni Amavasya. I will talk on Jan 27” Vijay Kumar Vangalapudi even offered to provide personalised logs with photographs of enthusiasts with the logo Come Let’s Talk.

Babu Gogineni came out lashing at the astrologers for spreading nonsensical beliefs only to frighten the people. In a video interview on Facebook, he said that Srinivasa Gargeya who propounded ‘the silent theory’ remained aloof from public life for the last two days claiming out of station. He wondered whether these astrologers knew what Amavasya means.

Narne Venkata Subbaiah, president of AP Rationalists Association, in a hard-hitting article in a vernacular daily said these astrologers had no idea on difference between the stars, planets and satellites.

Arun Kumar comments on Facebook that people should respect the Indian Constitution and Article 51 A (h) which propounds, “It shall be the duty of every citizen of India to develop the scientific temper, humanism and the spirit of enquiry and reform.” He elaborately sketches the movements of Sun, Moon and Earth and explains how the new moon (Amavasya) occurs. He advises people to put aside myths and superstitions and enjoy life of good ethical standards and principles.
