Mulugu Ghanpur (Bhupalpally): The police have recovered 426.34 grams of gold ornaments from a group of treasure hunters at Kotagullu (Ganapeshwaralayam) in Mulugu Ghanpur mandal of the district.

Four persons have been arrested while another was said to be absconding. The value of the ornaments was said to be around Rs 16 lakh. The police are yet to recover 100 grams of gold ornaments from the fifth accused.

Eturnagaram DSP, K Dakshina Murthy produced the arrested people before media at Ghanpur (M) police station on Saturday along with the recovered ornaments. They were identified as K Srinivas Reddy and A Mahender Reddy of Gandhi Nagar, D Sudhakar and Poshala Kishore of Ghanpur (M) in the district.

The fifth accused was identified as C Bhadraiah of Rupireddypalli in Regonda mandal. The first four had given 100 grams of ornaments to Bhadraiah, a car driver, to sell. On learning about police investigating the case he ran away, the DSP said.

The incident took place on January 2 and the four accused secretly shared the loot among them. As the rumours of unearthing an ancient treasure spread in the village,

Ghanpur (M) VRO B Ravinder lodged a complaint and police started investigations.

Dakshina Murthy informed that the treasure was unearthed in a land bearing survey number 5 at Kotagullu to excavate soil for the use of a Masjid being built at Mulugu Ghanpur.
