Hyderabad: The Union Budget for 2017-18 presented by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday was hardly inspiring. There was nothing worthwhile for any section of society and any sector of the country's economy.

Particularly for the Minorities, the Union budget was very disappointing. The Finance Minister made reference to minority welfare on three occasions in his 58-page speech.

The Finance Minister said: "Our government is giving special importance to implementation of the schemes for welfare of Scheduled Castes,Scheduled Tribes and Minorities.

The allocation for the welfare of Scheduled Castes had been stepped up from Rs 38,833 crores in Budget Estimate 2016-17 to Rs 52,393 crore in 2017-18, representing an increase of about 35 per cent.

The allocation for Scheduled Tribes had been increased to Rs 31,920 crore and for Minority Affairs to Rs 4,195 crore. Minorities account for 20 per cent of the country's population (24.17 crore out of 121.08 crore) but they were allocated Rs 4,515 crores in the Union budget for 2017-18 which envisaged total expenditure of Rs 21,46,735 crore.

The outlay for Minorities was just 0.21 per cent (one-fifth of one percent) though they
account for 20 percent of the population.
