The officials claim that they have the data regarding the number of community halls and open spaces. But, they do not have records to show under whose control they are functioning.

Interestingly, GHMC official website too does not display any information about community halls and vacant lands in Estates section. The apathy on the part of the officials to garner information on these counts has led to the GHMC losing huge revenue.

According to civic body officials, there are not less than 66 vacant lands and 840 community halls under GHMC limits. The official said due to negligence on the part of staff on the ground GHMC has not been able to get revenue of any sort from community halls.

He said the city community halls have been handed over to self-help groups (SHGs) when the State remained undivided.

A senior GHMC official told The Hans India that he was shocked to learn that the Deputy Commissioners too had no information on number of community halls and their maintenance records. The big question is what happened to the records.

He said several vacant lands had been encroached upon and sold. He also said the community halls were taken over by the local leaders and they had become function halls. Each community hall is fetching between Rs 10,000 and Rs 15,000 for each function.

The official further said the GHMC in order to bring more transparency and accountability in the Estates had now decided to geo-tag all properties under it.

Apart from it, the civic body would hereafter rent out community halls for marriage functions at nominal fee. The rent for each function is likely be fixed between RS 1,000 and RS 2,000.
