Chamars, dominant SC community in Uttar Pradesh, oppose categorisation

Hyderabad: There is no question of giving up the efforts to put pressure on the Centre on the issue of SC categorization, claim the opposition parties.

The sudden cancellation of appointment given to the delegation of all political parties in the state which was to be led by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is only to avoid a political controversy in view of election in Uttar Pradesh, feel the opposition parties here.

According to TPCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy, it appears that the Prime Minister was briefed by his aides that this could have serious ramifications in the UP elections as the Chamar community which is a dominant SC community there was opposed to categorisation.

Talking to The Hans India, Uttam Kumar Reddy said the Congress party had anticipated such a scenario.

He said he had discussed the issue with AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi and other party leaders during his recent meeting in New Delhi. They were of the view that any effort to have an All

India Policy would keep the issue hanging fire for long. One state may agree while the other may oppose.

Hence it was felt that the TPCC should urge the Prime Minister to either make it state specific amendment or amend the act in such way that the decision to categorise should be left to the respective states within the frame work of the Constitution.

The Congress party, he said, was of the firm view that all sub-castes should get the benefits of reservation and that is why it had demanded that the Chief Minister lead a delegation to New Delhi.

TTDP working president A Revanth Reddy said that they would continue to fight for the categorisation of SCs. In the past, several commissions were constituted and Justice Usha Mehra commission, which had gone into the issue in detail, had favoured categorisation of SCs.

Here the MRPS has been waging a relentless battle for categorisation of SCs and it was for the Centre to come with a formula to see that it does not get entangled in legal problems.

AIMIM sources said that all political parties in Telangana had extended their support to categorisation of SCs and since Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu addressing a massive public gathering organised by the Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti (MRPS) in November publicly stated that the BJP was in favour of it.

It is now the responsibility of the NDA government to find a way out immediately.
