‘Preps in full swing for Jammulamma Jatara’

Gadwal: The preparations for the famous Jammulamma Jatara at Jammichedu village of Gadwal mandal under Jogulamba Gadwal district are going on at full stretch.

According to Purendhar, Endowment officer, the preparations for the famous Jammulamma Jatara in the district have begun on February 7 and a series of activities will be carried out till February, 10, when the final event of ‘Brahmotsava Jatara’ will end.

“The eminent Jammulamma jatara is in Gadwal; the temple of ‘Jammulamma deity’ is surrounded by Priyadarshini Jurala Project (PJR) reservoir, where the water for left canal is stored.

To protect it from submergence, a bund has been constructed surrounding the temple.

Every year on ‘Shudda Paurnami’ a huge procession is carried out to bring the ‘deity’ from Gurram Gadda to Temple at Jammichedu.

The procession will be carried out in bullock carts and more than 30,000 people from various parts of the district as well as from neighbouring states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra come here to take darshan of the Jammulamma deity.

For this Jatara we undertook all the necessary precautions and prime priority is gven to sanitation, cleanliness and safety of the pilgrims,” said Purendhar.

The Jammulamma jatara has a dated historical background and this festive fare of Jammulamma deity was also patronized by the Gadwal Samsthana rulers.

It is said that the Jammulamma deity is a ‘Swayambhu avatara’ where the deity’s idol was first found by a farmer when he was tilling his land.

Later, when he used the same stone as a weight for his plough to till the land deeply, the stone displaced itself to its original place and surprised everyone.

From then, people believe it as Jammulamma devata, which gives villagers prosperity and health.
