Hyderabad: The two-wheeler taxi service, which was flagged off in January by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and Industries Minister K T Rama Rao, has been put on hold. The two-wheeler taxis will take off only after the government amends the Motor Vehicle Act. According to officials, there are no guidelines in the present Act for these taxis to ply on road and operate as stage carriages.

It may be recalled that the International transportation network company Uber had signed a MoU with Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd to help solve the transportation and congestion problems for commuters in Hyderabad and help them reach their destination quickly and conveniently.

These taxis were to charge Rs 25 per first three km and Rs 5 for subsequent km. The bike taxis were proposed to be introduced in areas like Hitec City, Madhapur, Kondapur and Gachibowli to cater to the needs of the IT employees, to begin with.

The Transport department officials said the existing rules under the Central Motor Vehicle Act do not allow the company to start its operations in the state.

A senior official told The Hans India that the road transport ministry was yet to amend the MV Act to provide legality to the bike taxis. “There are no guidelines fixed yet.

As per the rule no private operator is allowed to run vehicles as stage carriage. Only the RTC has the permission to run the vehicle as stage carriage. The company wanted to start a new initiative and hence flagging off the taxi service was taken up,” the official added.

When asked how the bike taxi service was being allowed in Goa and Haryana, the sources said that those government’s had relaxed the rules and were being run on pilot basis in certain designated places only.

According to RTA sources, about 25 two-wheelers have been registered under the commercial category (yellow plate) but even they do not have permission to run as stage carriages. The drivers should also posses commercial licence. The private vehicles and normal driving licences will not be allowed to use as taxis, the official added.
