Hyderabad: GHMC projects to the tune of Rs 30,000 crore, including some flagship programmes like strategic road development, double bedroom housing project, construction of modernised markets, bus bays and graveyards have come to a grinding halt due to fund crunch.

The GHMC had proposed to develop six skyways (111 km), 11 corridors, 54 junctions and 68 major roads at a cost of Rs 25,000 crore.

The state government has already sanctioned Rs 2,631 crore for starting the works at 12 junctions. But the corporation could ground works only at two junctions near Mind Space building and Bahadurpura junction, where the corporation proposes to construct an underpass and three skyways.

Similarly, the corporation had decided to construct one lakh double bedroom houses under GHMC limits at a cost of Rs 7,900 crore. The government had sanctioned Rs 1,725 crore to construct 20,569 2BHK houses at 50 locations.

But the GHMC could so far construct only 396 houses at IDH colony and recently finalised a tender to construct 4,428 houses at Ahmedguda at a cost of Rs 383 crore.

The tenders for the houses at Hamali Basthi, Bahadurpally and Bagh Hayathnagar are still under evaluation. The bidders have participated in tender process at 45 locations to construct 16,570 houses. In the remaining five locations the bidders did not express any interest.

Similarly, the corporation had proposed to construct 50 bus bays but it could manage to construct only 20. The corporation had also proposed to construct 800 modernised bus bays.

The GHMC had announced to construct 200 model markets at a cost of Rs 300 crore. During the phase I, it had decided to complete the construction of 50 model markets but managed to complete 13 and the rest remain on paper.

The corporation had other programmes, including modernising graveyards, which were to be taken up at a cost of about Rs 200 crore.

According to sources, only 10 per cent of the works could be completed. When asked about it, a senior GHMC official told The Hans India that the corporation was not in a position to embark on any project due to severe financial crunch.

He said the corporation has been looking forward for the budget 2017-18. He hoped that the government would provide financial aid to the corporation to complete the projects at the earliest.
