Hyderabad: RTI activist M Srinivas on Tuesday alleged that the Reserve Bank of India had not been providing information pertaining to cash deposits in banks prior and post to the demonetisation.

Srinivas had sought a reply under RTI Act pertaining to total value of Rs 100 and Rs 1,000 notes in banks before November 8, 2016. In reply to the RTI query filed by him, RBI exempted itself from disclosure of the information in terms of Section (8) (1) (g) of RTI Act 2005 (Information, the disclosure of which would endanger the life or physical safety of any person or identify the source of information or assistance given in confidence for law enforcement or security purposes).

Not satisfied with the reply, the RTI activist appealed to the Central Public Information Officer (CPIO), Department of Currency and Management (DCM). Reacting positively to the query, DCM, in its reply, said that it was observed that the information sought pertained to overall amount in banks and not related to any particular branch or person which may endanger life or personal safety of any person. The DCM has directed the CPIO to revisit the query and if any documented information is available on record, the same may be disclosed subject to the provisions/exemption under the RTI Act.

The RTI activist also queried about the total amount deposited in the banks from November 9 2016. But the reply said that the information was provided in the official website.

The DCM said the CPIO had provided the appellant with a specific web link on the RBI website wherein the information sought in the query was available on the public domain. It said that in his appeal, the appellant had contended that the reply was incomplete and not specific.

The DCM said it was observed that the CPIO was not expected to provide the information which had been placed in the public domain.

Reacting to it Srinivas said that the RBI did not provide information of any sort and it had been misleading the public with the false replies to the RTI queries.
