Hyderabad: The house inside Radhika Colony in West Marredpally was always believed to be in the name of late AIADMK chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, but it is, in fact, in the name of V K Sasikala. Since the death of Jayalalithaa, the ‘asset keeper’ Sasikala’s name has been cropping up in several properties as she held assets for Jayalalithaa.

The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) officials say that the assessment might have been done in the 90s. The house bearing the number 16, GFFFF in Radhika Colony is now in lock and key. The Secunderabad Cantonment Board officials say that the annual property tax is Rs 17,712 per year and the owner has not paid tax for the last two years. Now the outstanding amount stands at Rs 35,424.

The independent house in one of the first gated communities in the twin-cities at Radhika Colony has been locked for the past three years though the same was brimming with activity when Jayalalithaa stayed here for one-and-a-half years between 2001 and 2003, says colony secretary Suren Kumar Poruri. Six months back, the Radhika Colony committee sent a letter to Jayalalithaa to repair the structure as it was not in use for a long time. Suren says, “A person was sent from Chennai who stayed here and renovated the house.

They were planning to let it out when Jayalalithaa died.” The current market value of the house is between Rs 1.5 crore to Rs 2 crore and the rental value is about Rs 50,000. The colony was established 25 years ago. Ramesh (name changed on request), a resident, said that Jayalalithaa when stayed here did not mingle with people much and there used to be high security but the house was always teeming with VIP guests.

Residents say that Jayalalithaa might have bought the property as it is a gated community and there is security. Also, the airport then was at Begumpet which is just 3-4 km away from Radhika Colony. When asked if the house would be sealed? The SCB officials said that the law would take its course and as of now the focus is to collect property tax. Raghavan, a resident of West Marredpally, said, “It is now clear that Sasikala was used to hold assets of Jayalalithaa to launder ill-gotten wealth.
