Visakhapatnam: The city police on Sunday arrested four members of a family, including two juveniles, in the sensational murder of 70-year-old Chilla Satyavathi, a former corporator and active leader of ruling TDP. Police cracked the case within four days of the murder and recovered all the stolen property from the arrested persons.

Satyavathi was found dead in her room of her three-storey building in busy Allipuram area in the city on February 14. Police initially suspected it as a murder but based on clues and post-mortem report, they could confirm she was smothered to death.

Giving details of the case, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Navin Gulati said their teams arrested tenants S Nagaraju (30) a native of Nalgonda district, his wife Sangu Padma, and their juvenile son aged 10 years and a paying guest aged 17 years.

The DCP said that the accused Nagaraju, who worked as a daily wage worker, was a tenant in the second floor of the building.

Satyavathi often told Nagaraju and his wife that her relatives were planning to kill her for property. Taking advantage of this, Nagaraju hatched a conspiracy to eliminate her for gain and convinced Satyavathi that his youngest son would give her company and sleep in her house, as Satyavathi was aged and there may be some emergencies.

As Satyavathi was childless, she agreed to the offer as she had a liking for the young boy. On the day of the murder, Naga Raju gave a cellphone to his son and told him to call him up once Satyavathi fell asleep and also open the door from inside.

Accordingly, the 10-year-old son of Nagaraju opened the door and called his father when the elderly woman was asleep. All the family members of Nagaraju entered the room of the woman and smothered her to death with a pillow and took four bangles and a gold chain before going back to their room in the second floor.

Based on the post-mortem report and finger prints from the crime scene, police investigated the case and suspected that Nagaraju and his family were involved in the murder.

The DCP said that it was a sensational case as there were no initial clues and the needle of suspicion was pointing towards a different angle.
