Bhadrachalam: The Government Degree and PG College here has set an example for others to emulate by implementing a 60-day mid-day meal scheme to benefit the students from the Agency areas. The programme is being implemented with the financial support from the college teachers and the philanthropic public.
Bhadradri-Kothagudem Joint Collector Ramkishan launched the scheme on 30th January. The college provides lunch to at least 200 students of BA, B.Com and B.Sc courses. Initially, the programme will run till March 28th and there are plans to continue it further under the United Nations Development Programme Project.
The college teachers pooled Rs 1 lakh for the scheme, whose daily expenditure will be between Rs 4,500 and Rs 5,000. Dr Nandru Gopi, college principal plays an instrumental role in the initiation of the scheme. As many students hail from far off places and are skipping lunch unable to afford it and others prefer to go without it.
Keeping this situation in mind Gopi discussed it with his colleagues and decided to implement it as his proposal met with a positive response. The college management invites two VIPs from the town to implement the programme on a daily basis.
The UNDP conducted a preliminary exercise to run the scheme on an experimental basis in some colleges in Telangana.
While the UNDP bears Rs 20 per head the students have to shell down Rs 5 per head to implement the mid-day meals scheme. If any student is not able to pay Rs 5, the college management will bear it on behalf of the student. So, there are plans to implement the scheme all through the academic year 2017-18.
Describing it as a welcome development, Ramkishan appealed to the voluntary organisations to come forward to implement the scheme. He recalled that a similar programme launched by him in Mahbubnagar district, is still running successfully.
Talking to The Hans India, Gopi went on record stating that the teaching staff of the college is extremely satisfied with the scheme implementation. He hailed the support of the District Collector Rajiv Gandhi Hanumanthu, who promised financial support of Rs 1.50 lakh to the scheme.
Philanthropic public belonging to the temple town have come forward to lend their support to the scheme. According to a college student, Puli Ashok, now the students would not have to attend classes with stomach half-full.
