Hyderabad: Focusing on the reduction of number of deaths due to heat stroke this summer, a two-day National workshop on preparation of Heat wave Action Plan organised by National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), began at Dr MCR-HRD Institute on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, one of the members of NDMA, R K Jain felt that the preventive measures adopted by people following awareness programmes by government had brought down the number of deaths in the previous two years. He called upon the organisations and State governments to come up with suggestions for plan of action for the ensuing summer.

Another member of NDMA, D N Sharma lauded the State government’s efforts in bringing down the number of deaths in Telangana. He asked the experts to consider various factors including standard of living, financial conditions, topography etc while coming up with report.

Joint Secretary, NDMA Dr V Thiruppugazh informed that if the temperature was higher by 5 Degree Celsius than the normal temperature during the season, it would be considered as ‘Heat wave’ conditions. According to him, 22,000 persons died during 1992 to 2015 due to heat stroke.

During the past year, the number was reduced to 1100 in contrast to 2400 of 2015. The number can still be brought down completely, if the required data would be available on time.

Dr MCR HRD, Additional Director General, Dr Kota Tirupataiah and Special Commissioner, Disaster Management, Sada Bhargavi also spoke on the first day of the workshop.
