Hyderabad: The High Court at Hyderabad has directed both the governments of Telangana State and Andhra Pradesh to bestow the awards conferred on journalists way back in 2012 within the coming eight weeks along with the cash award amounts.

Justice Challa Kodandaram gave this direction while hearing a writ petition moved by senior journalist Konduri Ramesh Babu and another complaining against the inordinate delay in presenting the awards to them despite a G.O. issued to this effect by the then unified Andhra Pradesh government in 2012.

The counsel for the petitioner brought to the notice of the court several representations made by the award-winning journalists to both the Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana State as well as the governor and Commissioners of Information and Public Relations and said no action was taken on their pleas.

He pointed out that the selection of journalists for the awards was made by the committees comprising eminent persons duly constituted by the then Andhra Pradesh government for the years 2008, 2009 and 2010. A total of 33 journalists were selected but only three of them were given the awards so far.

Reacting strongly to this inordinate delay, Justice Kodandaram commented that such award-winning journalists must not be made to beg for what is rightfully theirs. He questioned the government pleaders for General Administration Departments of both the States as to why such a delay was happening.

They sought time to get back with instructions, but the judge passed interim orders directing both the states to confer the awards along with cash award amounts to the petitioners within eight weeks.
