The long-awaited tribal university dream of the Adivasis is finally inching closer to reality with the authorities on a move to acquire land on fast track near Mulug in Bhupalpally district.

Mulug (Bhupalpally): The long-awaited tribal university dream of the Adivasis is finally inching closer to reality with the authorities on a move to acquire land on fast track near Mulug in Bhupalpally district.

It may be noted here that Union Government has also announced Rs 10 crore in this year’s budget for the varsity. The first move for tribal varsity was made in 2008 by the then chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy who understood the need for starting a varsity offering courses in tribal development.

He then proposed to establish the varsity in Bhadrachalam Agency. Despite the fact that an expert committee of Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGNTU), led by then registrar Ashok Singh, visited the Agency in 2011, the proposal did not make any headway thereafter.

Later, the Central government has accepted to establish the varsity in Telangana as per the AP Reorganisation Act-2014. Not taking cognizance of earlier proposal of Bhadrachalam Agency and his own promise made to the tribals in Adilabad, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has finally announced that varsity would come up in Warangal (undivided) district. Since then the government was on the lookout for suitable land. The requirement is said to be around 500 acres for the varsity.

Against this backdrop, a Central team consisting of officials from the Ministry of Human Resource Development accompanied by State officials inspected a site near Gattamma temple, one of the destinations selected under the Tribal Tourism Circuit, close to the National Highway-163, a couple of days ago.

According to official information, huge swathe of government land is available near Gattamma temple. It’s learnt that about 487 acres is available out of which 273 acres is State land and rest belongs to forest department.

With land acquisition is not a problem to consider, it seems that the Central team in all probability is expected to finalise this site. Moreover, the proposed site, which is 47 km from Warangal city on the NH-163, and not far away from historic Ramappa temple and picturesque Laknavaram lake, is said to be ideally located.

Speaking to The Hans India, Minister for Tribal Welfare Azmeera Chandulal, who represents Mulug, said: “The site is ideally located as it falls between Khammam and Adilabad, the two other predominantly tribal districts.”

Confirming that officials have inspected the site to conduct feasibility study, Bhupalpally Joint Collector D Amay Kumar said: “We are expecting a positive decision from the Central team in about a fortnight.”
