Hyderabad: The long awaited dream of the Village Organisation Assistants (VOAs) is set to come true with the decision of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao to hike their salaries.

There are 18,405 VOAs working in the state with salaries ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 1,500 per month. They are paid salaries based on the respective village organisations, strength of members and the financial situation. The VOAs claim that they are being paid peanuts for the laborious work they put it.

The VOAs were in a hope that the government pays some salary apart from the amount paid by the village organisations. In the united Andhra Pradesh regime, VOAs have represented their case to the government in number of occasions but got no response.

Against this backdrop, the Chief Minister held a special meeting with the VOAs in Pragathi Bhavan here on Wednesday. He assured them that the VOAs in the State would get a salary of Rs 5,000 per month. Rs 2,000 would be paid by the Village Committees and the additional amount of Rs 3,000 would be borne by the government through Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP).

“The government is taking all measures to strengthen the rural economy. As part of this, women in the Self Help Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas groups (DWCRA) should also be strengthened financially. Women groups in the state are doing an excellent work. They have earned a good name. Besides saving money they should also start cottage industries,” the Chief Minister said.

The Chief Minister said that the DWCRA women should process the produce from the village to cater the market demands by producing consumer products such as Chilli and Turmeric powder, Papads, Khara Mixture etc., We will give the necessary training to the DWCRA women and extend all the help needed.

“Study how women groups are working in other states and countries like Bangladesh. We will prepare a comprehensive plan and implement it in this regard,” the Chief Minister said.

Ministers T Harish Rao and Jupally Krishna Rao, Government’s Chief Advisor Rajiv Sharma, SERF CEO Neetu Prasad, CMO Principal Secretary S Narsing Rao and other senior officials were also present in the meeting.
