Hyderabad: With the cash flow problem coming to an end, digital transactions in the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) have witnessed a drastic fall. This is true even in Siddipet which has boasted of attaining 100 per cent digital transaction.

The TSRTC has installed card swiping machines and ticket issuing machines (TIMS) connected with Bluetooth device in the RTC buses. These are the part of the hi-tech services introduced in Siddipet as it attained the status of the first cashless constituency, represented by none other than Minister for Irrigation T Harish Rao.

TSRTC Chairman S Satyanarayana, inspired by the achievement in the constituency had introduced the hi-tech gadgets in the first week of January when cash crunch was felt acutely following demonetisation of high-currency notes.

A senior official told The Hans India that there was good response earlier when there was shortage of cash as over 85 per cent of the passengers had swiped their cards for purchasing tickets. However, the usage of these machines decreased gradually in almost all the depots.

The officials attributed the free flow of currency as the main reasons for the fall in the digital transactions. The promotion of digital transactions was taken as a pilot project in Siddipet by the TSRTC. There are 112 bus services from the Siddipet bus depot and the TSRTC procured 130 POS machines for encouraging the digital transactions.

TSRTC MD G V Ramana Rao said the card-based transactions had now come down to 20 per cent from a high of 80 per cent during the early days. He said this was taken as a pilot project and based on the success it would be extended to other depots.

He further said the Jubilee Bus Station (JBS) in Secunderabad is the only depot where the use of POS machines was encouraging. Here passengers are swiping their cards for the tickets. The machines are coming in handy in case of passengers who cannot have small change, he said.

There has been decline in the usage of POS machines even in Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station in Hyderabad.
