Bharati takes a bold step to become Auto Bharati
In an incident that is very rare even in cities, a woman barged into the male bastion and took up career as a three-wheeler driver in a small town like Done to support her auto-rickshaw driver husband financially in running the family.
Done: In an incident that is very rare even in cities, a woman barged into the male bastion and took up career as a three-wheeler driver in a small town like Done to support her auto-rickshaw driver husband financially in running the family. Interestingly, two brothers of her husband are in the same vocation. She is pursuing the career pocketing many an insult and overcoming hurdles.
Identified as ‘Auto Bharati’, she is a source of inspiration for many. Taking a cue from her, many women want to take up driving an autorickshaw as a career and approaching her to train them in driving. To shoulder the family responsibility, Bharati as a sincere housewife followed her husband’s foot-steps. It does not mean, she neglects her daily chores.
She dedicated her three-wheeler service to women. The couple is pooling the money earned and sharing family responsibilities. Since her’s is the only three-wheeler being driven by a female, she struck an instant identification with people of the town.
To support her large family comprising in-laws and three children, she used to work as a labourer prior to hitting upon the idea of driving a three-wheeler. The family used to be in a celebration mood when she finds work, otherwise; getting two square meals a day was difficult.
Therefore, she worked hard to learn the skill of driving in six months. She took a bold step and engaged in the vocation of driving the three-wheeler for the last two months. With the encouragement from her husband, Lakshman Rao, she successfully completed SSC. Her parents and also that of her spouse are engaged as daily-wage earners.
When she was out on Done roads with her vehicle, some pitied her, while some others had a good word for her. She took a tough decision for the bright future of her children. Because of her decision, her spouse also faced humiliation. But, in course of time, those who belittled her are beginning to appreciate her. Children’s responsibility and to meet huge cost of their education made Bharati, ‘Auto Bharati’.
Every woman of Done has Auto Bharati’s mobile number. She escorts lonely women to their destination and plies school children in the mornings and evenings. She dreams of running a driving school of her own.
