Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation feels that it can effectively implement the flagship programmes of the government like SRDP and 2BHK housing scheme if they get a budget allocation of Rs 2,018 crore.

The state government during the financial year 2016-17 had only allocated Rs 526 crore for GHMC. The officials said that they urged the government for a three-fold increase for 2017-18 budget. Sources said that the corporation had proposed Rs 1,153.50 crore for road improvement and double bedroom housing project for the urban poor.

According to corporation officials, there is hope that the government would allocate at least Rs 1,000 crore in order to speed up the 2BHK housing project. The housing scheme is an election promise which needs to be completed at a fast pace, the officials said. The GHMC also needs about Rs 500 crore for road improvement and construction of drains etc.

The GHMC official further said that the civic body had also sought Rs 375 crore for Haritha Haram, Rs 250 crore for slum free programme and Rs 100 crore for tribal sub-plan programme. He said that the corporation would face severe financial crunch if the government does not allocate funds sought by them in the State budget.
