Hyderabad: Although, the Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao has grand plans to procure 80 lakh sheep from neighbouring states, the Department of Animal Husbandry is highly skeptical about achieving the target.

According to senior officials of the Department of Animal Husbandry the department first was planning to procure sheep from Northern States. But a study revealed that their survival in arid conditions of Telangana would be difficult. The officials who visited states like Gujarat, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh are of the opinion that they should opt for Nellore and Deccani breed.

After studying other options, the Department has now decided to go in for tender process for procurement of these two breeds from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The state government is likely to spend Rs 2,500 crore for the project with loan from NCDC (National Cooperative Development Corporation).

It may be mentioned here that at first the government considered to give Rs 1.4 lakh to each eligible farmer directly. But later it was decided that government should provide the farmers with the procured sheep to ensure that sheep rearing takes off without any hitch. But the biggest challenge for the Department now is procurement of animals. According to them, getting 80 lakh Deccani and Nellore breed in one year would be a gigantic task.
