Hyderabad: The Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) has strongly defended its scheme of offering jobs to dependents of its employees who opt for voluntary retirement scheme due to ill health. The scheme is a social security measure to the employees who have worked under very harsh conditions, in deep underground mines up to 400 metres depth, the company said.
The SCCL, represented by its General Manager (Personnel) A Ananda Rao filed a counter affidavit to this effect in the High Court at Hyderabad in connection with the public interest litigation case filed by an unemployed youth K Satish Kumar from Godavarikhani in Peddapalli district.
The petitioner challenged the circular issued by the SCCL on December 12, 2016 to provide employment to the dependent persons of the employees on compassionate grounds under the VRS. The SCCL termed the petitioner's apprehension that the dependant employment scheme would take away employment opportunities of the unemployed youth as illusionary.
The SCCL, in its counter affidavit, also informed that this is not an entirely a new scheme introduced recently, but was similar to the one in existence till 2002, albeit with suitable modifications. The scheme would be applicable to only those who have been declared to be medically unfit by the company doctors to continue working.
It was informed that in pursuance of the scheme, about 5,875 employees have opted for the scheme till February this year and their applications would be considered strictly in accordance with the guidelines. It was also submitted that around 2,500 persons had been recruited directly for various other posts in the company and the scheme was not coming in the way of such recruitment and therefore sought dismissal of the PIL.
