Mahbubnagar: In order to commemorate 125th anniversary of district jail here a 2K, 5K and 10K run will be held on Sunday with the participation of Ministers Jupally Krishna Rao and Lakshma Reddy, people’s representatives and Tollywood actors.

Jail superintendent Dasaradharami Reddy on Saturday appealed to one and all to take part in the events and make them a grand success.

Eminent persons, who were confined in the prison, built in 1892 by the erstwhile Nizam rulers, were Swami Ramananda Teertha, who started Andhra Pradesh State unit of the Congress in 1936 against the Nizam, Kodandaram, Chairman of Telangana JAC, Ministers Etala Rajender, Jupally Krishna Rao, MP Jitender Reddy and MLA Srinivas Goud.

Director General (Prisons) Vinay Kumar Singh, who was instrumental in imparting literacy to over 10,000 inmates of the prison, started training classes for women prisoners in stitching and weaving.

A petrol station was established close to the jail as an ancillary unit to it. Those, who are serving their life-term and known for good conduct, were sent to the jail here and each of them is entitled to draw Rs 9,000 a month towards their salary. Similarly, 20 others are also in the jail here on a daily wage of Rs 110. They all work in shifts.

The prisoners are expressing their gratitude towards the jail officials for opening bank accounts in their name and depositing their wages in it. The prisoners are entitled to send money to their family members.

For the first time in the history of Telangana State a job mela was held for those who had completed their term in the prison. In the mela, over 125 persons got jobs in various companies. At shops in front of the jail, goods manufactured by jail inmates were put on display.

The jail is getting revenue of Rs 4.50 lakh a month by way of sale of petrol and goods manufactured by prisoners.
