Hyderabad: Internet has invaded the lives of people. In this fast-paced era of digitalisation where everyone is trying to adapt to technology it is unfair and almost impossible to prevent children from using technology. But, keeping a tab on how the internet is being used by the children is vital as it may exercise adverse effects on them.
Creating a friendly environment at home by providing a platform for the children to share their troubles appears to be a major solution when it comes to prevention of online abuse, according to experts on this subject, who shared their views at the two-day conference on ‘online child sexual abuse,’
organised by the Crime Investigation Department of Telangana, in association with TULIR , Centre for the Prevention and Healing of child sexual abuse.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the conference on Thursday, Home Minister Naini Narsimha Reddy said “Adolescents are not in a position to distinguish between the good and the bad. Taking this as an advantage, predators are committing offenses against children through social media.”
It made it necessary to train police personnel and other stakeholders in this area .Awareness on this aspect should be created among all the stakeholders including parents, teachers and police personnel, so that the children would get right guidance, the Home Minister added.
Reiterating State government’s support for police department at all times, he said the deliberations at the conference would go a long way in ensuring safety of the children. Delivering her keynote address, Chairperson of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) Stuti Kacker said one of the reasons for increase in rise of crimes against women and children was smart phone.
“If we allow our children to access the filth on the internet, they will never have a normal life. So, we must protect our kids and nobody from outside will come to protect the kids,” Stuti said.
Executive Director of Tulir, Centre for the Prevention and Healing of Child Sexual Abuse, Vidya Reddy and other experts felt that blaming and shaming of the victims of child sexual abuse should be stopped.
Instead, the parents should create an environment where children can express their troubles easily so as to keep cyber bullies at bay.
