Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has collected Rs 920 crore till date and is in hopes of mopping up at least Rs 500 crore in two weeks towards penalty of property tax from defaulters according to officials. The corporation which waived off Rs 532.57 crore towards penalty of property tax from defaulters during financial years 2014-15 and 2015-16 has called a halt to the practice this financial year and would now be mopping up equal amount in the form of tax revision.
The corporation has revised the property tax rates after 2008. The per sft charge in the core city has been increased from 60 paisa to Rs 1 depending on the areas and in the out skirts it has been increased from Rs 40 paisa to Rs 80 paisa. According to revised rates and as per the government's direction the corporation has been collecting three years penalties for new constructions and for old constructions they have been levying penalties 2008.
When asked about it, a senior revenue wing official told The Hans India that the corporation during the current financial year did not write any letter to State government for waiving off penalty amount. The GHMC official further said out of total 14 lakh properties in the city limits the corporation has collected Rs 920 crore from about 9.5 lakh properties.
The official said that as per governments direction the corporation had identified 5,30,027 properties for revising property tax. These were the properties whose tax was reduced from Rs 1,200 to Rs 101 before GHMC elections.
According to him the corporation has verified 4, 45,126 properties and revised the tax for 2, 05,087 properties and issued notices to 1, 88,921 properties. The official said that the property tax demand for revised properties has been increased by about Rs 100 crore.
The official also added that the corporation would now collect Rs 500 crore from 4.5 lakh defaulters in two weeks and that the corporation would mop up Rs 250 crore from 100 top defaulters. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has decided not to give any penalty waiver on property tax during this financial year.
The civic body has already conducted a comprehensive survey and is collecting property tax according to the revised rates. The corporation has been targeting such properties whose property tax has been reduced from Rs 1,200 to Rs 101. And for the remaining properties the corporation would collect the property tax according to the revised rates.
