Hyderabad: As sheep and goat farming has been accorded top priority in 2017-18 financial year, the State government has come up with a proposal to promote meat processing and leather tanning industry in a big way in the state in the coming years, according to officials.

On the lines of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, the Telangana government has decided to invite huge private investments in the establishment of meat processing units, export zones and manufacturing of leather products.

State Industries Department headed by Principal Secretary Jayesh Ranjan has been entrusted with the responsibility of studying the prospects of promotion of meat and leather processing industries.

Top officials of the State Industries Department told The Hans India that the contribution of livestock industry to the State GSDP had been less than 6 per cent, whereas in the neighbouring States including Andhra Pradesh, sheep, goat, fisheries and diary sectors were playing an important role in the State’s growth rate. The government also found that the leather industries in Chennai were getting major portion of raw material from Telangana.

The government estimated that sheep and goat farming had the potential to contribute nearly 8 to 10 per cent of the total growth rate projected under agriculture and allied sectors in 2017-18, officials said and added that the promotion of meat processing industry would only help to achieve the targets. At present, only two to four meat processing units were exporting products outside the country from Hyderabad.

The increase in the livestock farming would help attract more investments in the State. Telangana has already occupied top position in sheep population and 12 in goat population. Officials said the government was also studying sheep and goat breed varieties available in the country. The suitable breed varieties which can withstand the weather conditions would be distributed to the shepherds under the new livestock distribution scheme for which the government has earmarked more than Rs 3,000 crore in 2017-18.

Under the new industrial policy - TS-iPASS, brought into force in 2015, a special official team would be constituted to look after the promotion of meat processing industry in the State. As part of inviting investments in the processing industry, the government is planning to hold a summit with enthusiastic investors from worldwide by this year end, according to the officials.
