Five minor girls, who left home on March 16 without informing their parents with an intention to go to Varanasi and were found in Visakhapatnam zoo on Friday have been brought back to city safely on Saturday.

​Hyderabad: Five minor girls, who left home on March 16 without informing their parents with an intention to go to Varanasi and were found in Visakhapatnam zoo on Friday have been brought back to city safely on Saturday.

The five girls – aged 12 years and all of them residents of the Bapunagar and Chenna Reddy Nagar neighbourhood in Amberpet – left their homes in the afternoon informing their parents saying they were going to attend farewell party, police said.

However, none of the five girls returned home till late in the evening causing panic among the parents. A girl's mother E Savitha, lodged a complaint with the Amberpet police around 9 pm on March 16.

Immediately, police registered a case and examined the parents of all the five girls, flashed the message through traditional and social media. A special team was constituted to probe the case, police said.

Even as the efforts were underway, Amberpet police received a phone call at around 5 pm on Friday saying the missing girls were sitting in the canteen of the zoological park in Visakhapatnam. The caller, who is the manager of the canteen, recognised the girls since he had seen their faces on the television, police said.

The manager made the girls speak to the Amberpet police over phone. Police counselled the girls over phone and asked them to wait at the canteen. Immediately, city police requested Visakhapatnam police to take the girls and hand them over to Child Welfare Committee for safe custody, police said.

Subsequently, a police team headed by Sub-Inspector, Satyanarayana of Amberpet Police Station reached Visakhapatnam and took custody of the girls from the Child Welfare Committee and brought them back to Hyderabad safely.

The girls were counselled and handed over to their parents, police said.The minor girls told police that they had planned to visit Varanasi and boarded a train at Secunderabad Railway Station. However, they ended up in Visakhapatnam Zoo Park.
