Peddapalli-Nizamabad rail link to be commissioned tomorrow
Hyderabad: Come Saturday, the long-awaited 178-km Peddapalli-Nizamabad broad gauge rail link a dream that stretched over seven decades is finally here to happen.
In fact, the project was first mooted by the Nizam government in the mid-1940s. However, after the accession of the Princely State of Hyderabad, the proposal never saw the light of the day until 1993.
Thanks to the then prime minister PV Narasimha Rao for taking initiative to make the long-pending demand of the locals a reality.
In spite of this, the project works has always competed with the pace of a snail as the successive governments continued to allocate meagre funds for the rail line works.
The initial estimated cost of the rail line was Rs 926 crore but due to the inordinate delay it now reportedly crossed Rs 1,500 crore. In the first phase, the works on Peddapalli-Karimnagar line covering a distance of 35 km were completed in 2001 and a passenger train was introduced. In the second phase, the works between Karimnagar and Lingampet (Jagtial district) (47 km) were completed in 2007. Thereafter, it was a long wait for the people in the region.
Recently, the rail service was extended to Morthad. Speaking to The Hans India, the South Central Railway CPRO M Uma Shankar Kumar said “Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu will commission the Morthad-Nizamabad railway line via remote link from Hyderabad on March 25.
The existing aero-dynamic diesel-electric multiple unit (DEMU) train that shuttles between Peddapalli and Lingampet is extended to Nizamabad.” Simultaneously a programme will be held at Nizamabad, he added.
It’s learnt that Minister for Agriculture Pocharam Srinivas Reddy, MP K Kavitha, Rajya Sabha member D Srinivas and a host of people representatives will take part in the locally arranged programme.
Nizamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry president C Guru Prasad said “This is a dream come true for the locals. The link will reduce a considerable distance between north Indian States and Nizamabad.
As of now, shipment of goods is being done through Moula Ali railway station. Now the new line will provides a direct link to the grand trunk corridor. With the transportation tariffs coming down, it enables a competitive edge to the traders.”
Further, he stressed the need for improving facilities in the Nizamabad railway station. In all, the train will stop in 11 stations between Nizamabad and Peddapalli – Kothapalli, Gangadhara, Sultanabad, Mamidipalli, Anksapur, Medipalli, Mallyala, Jagtial, Metpally, Morthad and Armoor.
