Hyderabad: Creation of new districts has created a quandary for ascertaining the jurisdiction for Agriculture Extension Officers (AEO), some of whom are now in charge of 60,000 acres, when the actual criteria remain 5,000 acres (about 2,000 hectares). After reconsidering various factors and rationalising, the government has decided to come up with additional posts through fresh notification of TSPSC.

According to officials of Agriculture Department, there would be requirement of additional 300 posts due to the formation of new districts, even though 1258 AEO posts were filled during the month of Janauary, based on the notification issued earlier by Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC). Since the earlier posts were filled taking into consideration the Old districts, mandals and drought situations of 2015, there was synchronisation problem after district reorganisation.

Interestingly some of those who were serving as AEOs were also promoted, during the recent times towards increasing the number of existing vacancies. “After formation of new districts, revenue divisions, mandals the problem has only got worst. The formation of district also brought problems with identification of total agriculture land in the State. Moreover a particular AEO had to answer to two DAOs, causing technical problems” informed a higher official.

Hence the Department has decided to formulate a policy and rationalise the distribution of AEOs in new districts and mandals. Currently, each AEO is handling about 10 thousand acres of agriculture land. There is also variation in distribution of work, as some of them in districts like Jagtial are handling 60 acres of land. “The criteria remains that each AEO handles 5,000 acres of land, after fresh allocation of posts each of them would provide accordingly,” added the official.

The role of the AEO, include visiting each of the farmer for identifying the agriculture land and amount of it under crop. Further, they also have to conduct soil test, crop loss during natural calamities and ensuring funds like input subsidy and insurance is reached.
