Hyderabad: The State government had predicted an increase of 39.14 lakh tonnes (56.79 %) of total foodgrains production for the current financial year (2016-17). The Finance Minister Eatala Rajender, who released the 3rd Advance Estimates on Area, Yield and Production, said that this financial year, the total food grains production was estimated to be 90.59 lakh tonnes, which was 51.45 lakh tonnes the previous year, marking an increase by over 50 per cent.

According to estimates, the rice production is at 55.59 lakh tonnes when compared to 30.47 lakh tonnes the previous year. Maize production is 29.04 lakh tonnes when compared to previous 17.51 lakh tonnes. Rice and Maize are the main food grain crops, which together account for 93.42 of the total production under food grain crops during 2015-16, the report says.

Besides this, the Red gram is estimated at 2.45 lakh tonnes, which is higher when compared to the previous year’s production of 1.05 lakh tonnes, showing an increase of 133.33 per cent. While the pulses, sugarcane, oil seeds are estimated to be higher by 2.58 lakh tonnes, 25.70 lakh tonnes and 6.82 lakh tonnes, when compared with 2.47 lakh tonnes, 24.05 lakh tonnes and 5.79 lakh tonnes respectively. The estimate increase of oil seeds is 17.79 per cent.
