Hyderabad: The surprise visit by Health Minister Dr C Laxma Reddy to Gandhi Hospital proved costly for RMO Saraswati who was suspended and sent to her parent department for dereliction of duty. Dr Reddy pulled up the RMO after finding that there were no stretchers near the out-patient department.

The minister spent close to four hours and visited several wards and departments of the hospital. During the inspection, a spate of irregularities came to light. The minister interacted with patients seeking information of the services offered.

He warned the staff that action would be taken if they adopt negligent attitude towards patients while extending services to them at a time when the government was striving to improve the facilities in the state-owned hospitals. Dr Reddy while stressing the need for doctors and other staff to pull up their socks said henceforth the RMOs would be held responsible for the actions of their subordinates.

He pointed out that the people’s faith in Gandhi hospital had increased, which was clear from the 20 per cent rise in visits of patients in the recent past. Hence there was a need for the staff to treat the patients with devotion and care, he said, adding that the ministry would not spare the hospital personnel even in case of minor errors.
