Hyderabad: Telangana State Police has decided to introduce Global Mental Health Assessment Tool (GMHAT) on pilot basis in the State as part of its efforts to de-stress the police personnel and prevent untoward incidents.

This decision was taken after the Inspector General of Police (IGP), training, Charu Sinha met Prof Vimal Sharma, who developed the tool, at a workshop in New Delhi recently.

The tool developed by the Indian origin professor helps in proper assessment and identification of mental health problems at primary care level and providing appropriate care to the people suffering from mental disorders in any community, a senior police officer said.

Charu Sinha was representing Telangana police at a workshop on mental health and well being of persons held in New Delhi recently, where senior officials from various states police and Central armed police wings attended.

Charu Sinha was sent to the workshop keeping in view the increasing number of untoward incidents within the department such as suicides and attempts to commit suicide by police officials citing stress and harassment as reasons.

It may be recalled a Sub-Inspector of police, G Chittibabu, shot his wife Rekha before shooting himself to death at Dubbak on March 3, while another Sub-Inspector, Sridhar shot himself to death at Hyderabad on November 26, 2016.

On September 22 last year, trainee Sub-Inspector, T Kiran Kumar killed himself in Miryalaguda, while on August 30, Sub-Inspector, K Sridhar shot himself to death in Adilabad district and on August 17, Sub-Inspector, T Ramakrishna Reddy of Kuknoorpally shot himself to death.

Similarly, Sub-Inspector, Jagan Mohan Reddy of Peddapally shot himself to death on January 9, while another Sub-Inspector working at Yalal police station, Ramesh hanged himself in September 2015. In most cases, the police officials used the service weapons issued to them to take their lives and the reasons cited were either stress or harassment.

The increasing number of suicides and some police officials resorting to cruelty against family members and civilians allegedly because of the stress prompted the police bosses to look into the problem.
