Hyderabad: A bus shelter is the need of the hour at various places across the city. In the absence of any such facility, passengers including women, children and old people are seen waiting in the scorching sun.

In many places, the bus stop has shifted and now there is no designated spot and bus drivers stop the bus wherever they see a huge crowd.

At a few places the hawkers have taken over, in other places stray dogs are pushing commuters onto the road. This in a nutshell sums up the state of affairs of bus shelters and bus stops in the city.

Rekha Naidu, a resident of Khairatabad says, “In many places bus shelters are missing. With the summer already upon us it is a bitter battle every single day.” A random survey across the city revealed that in several places due to the lack of shelter, people take refuge under the Hyderabad Metro rail pillars and when they see an approaching bus, rush to catch it.

In some places, a single bus shelter is just not enough to cater to commuters, especially near schools and colleges. A case in point is the Neredmet and Shenoy Nursing Home bus stops in Secunderabad. Sridevi, an Intermediate student of Kasturbha College said, “Hundreds of students rush to the bus stop. There is a need for more bus shelters. Many a time students’ stand in the hot sun as there isn’t sufficient space.”

At Afzalgunj bus stop the traffic is so much that no one stands at the bus stop. At Road No 36 near Jubilee Hills buses stop right in the middle of the road under the metro rail pillars. K Vikram, a private employee says, “The government has been only making announcements of constructing bus shelters. Even this summer may go without bus shelters.”

From Kukatpally to Dilshuknagar, Chandayangutta to ECIL X Roads, hundreds of bus shelters are missing. There are 1,202 bus shelters in GHMC limits but the condition of most of them is not as good.

Speaking to The Hans India, Adwait Kumar Singh, additional commissioner, revenue, advertisement and trade license, GHMC said, “Tenders have been called for, the technical evaluation has been completed and the work in four packages would be awarded soon.”

In all 430 bus shelters would be constructed but as it seems the citizens would have to wait for a while. Going by the previous projects, the possibility of completion before the summer really sets in seems distant.
