Hyderabad: In spite of good rainfall last year, several areas in Hyderabad have seen a drop in the water table by a few metres. According to the latest records with the Groundwater Department, in Hyderabad district, Marredpally, Trimulgherry and Khairatabad are worst affected.

According to the Groundwater Department, Marredpally is the worst hit with the water table slumping to 3 metres below ground level (BGL). N Raji Reddy, Deputy Director, Groundwater Department said, “Every year the water levels increase between July and November and the levels keep dropping every month from November till June.

Indiscriminate digging of borewells and increasing construction activity are major reasons for fall in water levels.” He, however, went on to add that there was no reason to alarm as the average drop in the district is -0.97.

Water levels depleted in Triumulgherry, Bandlaguda and Khairatabad as well between 1 and 2 metres. Marginal fall in water levels is witnessed in Musheerabad, Sanjeevaiah Park, Indira Park, Bahadurpura, Saidabad, Shaikpet, Nampally, Chintalbasti, Darulshifa, Masab Tank and Kulsunpura.

Already in several places, borewell digging has started. Ramesh, a resident of West Marredpally, said, “Unless one digs 300 feet deep one cannot get water. Every year one has to go deeper thanks to the rise in apartments in the area.”
