Khammam: Green crusader Vanajeevi Daripalli Ramaiah, who received Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award, on March 30 for his outstanding contribution towards improving greenery, has on Sunday celebrated his achievement with the trees he planted a few decades ago.

Ramaiah, who received the award from President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday, came back to Khammam on Saturday night by train. In a rally from Naidupet, he along with his wife, Janamma, proceeded to Pallegudem (towards Kuravi road) where he embraced the trees he planted holding the Padma Shri award.

Later speaking to media persons at his residence in Reddipalli village, Ramaiah urged people to protect the environment by taking up plantation on a massive scale. Recalling his moments with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi, he said he had urged the PM to print trees on currency notes.
