80% of Hyderabad eateries serving unhygienic meat; some fined

Hyderabad: About 80 per cent of city eateries have been serving unhygienic food. This has been revealed in the recent inspection by the health officials of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. Major hotels, including Paradise, Astoria and others have been serving unchecked meat to its customers keeping public life at high risk. Restaurants have to source the meat which has been approved by a veterinary doctor at slaughter houses.

GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy recently held meeting with hotel managements, traders and shopkeepers and asked them to purchase stamped meat from GHMC slaughter houses. He said that there are slaughter houses in Amberpet, Ramnasthpura and New Bhoiguda.

The GHMC charges Rs 25 for slaughtering a sheep or goat (domestic) and Rs 100 for slaughtering a buffalo or cattle. Highly-placed sources in the corporation said that the lack of insufficient number of slaughter houses has been the reason for the illegal slaughtering.

A senior GHMC official told The Hans India that the civic body has been slaughtering 100 cattle and 80 goats on daily basis and number goes up to 140 (cattle) and 180 (goats and sheep) on Sundays at Amberpet slaughter house. He said that similarly the GHMC has been slaughtering 60 cattle and 150 goats and sheep at New Bhoiguda slaughter house. He also said that the GHMC has been slaughtering 450 cattle at Ramnasthpura slaughter house.

When asked about the meat consumption in the city, the official was clueless about it. However, the official said that the stamped meat from current slaughter houses would be sufficient to meet the needs of city residents.

He also said the GHMC has been working on constructing a modern slaughter house at Jiyaguda with advanced facilities such as cold storage unit, multi-level parking and effluent treatment plant.

However, the sources said that about 80 per cent of the 7,000 odd eateries have been serving unhygienic meat to the customers.

Meanwhile, Sagar Restaurant at Shapurnagar, which was using unstamped meat, has been seized by the GHMC.

Similarly, Sohail Hotel at Nalgonda Crossroads was imposed fine of Rs 40,000 for using unstamped meat, Astoria hotel at the RTC Crossroads was imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 for unhygienic conditions, Rs 20,000 was imposed on Paradise hotel at IS Sadan for serving unstamped meat and unhygienic food. Rs 20,000 fine was imposed on Minerva Grand at SD Road, Secunderabad for unhygienic conditions and unstamped meat. Rs 20,000 fine was imposed on Al Shaba hotel at Gachibowli for using unstamped meat. Drunk yard Shivani Restaurant and Bar at Gachibowli was fined Rs 10,000 for serving unstamped meat.
