Hyderabad: The State government’s ambitious scheme to distribute 84 lakh sheep to 4 lakh families will begin from July and modalities for it are expected to be finalised in a week by the Cabinet Sub-Committee headed by Animal Husbandry Minister T Srinivas Yadav.

  • A sub-committee is in the process of framing guidelines
  • Government has decided to launch the scheme after rainy season to ensure that there is fodder scarcity
  • Possible migration of people from districts like Adilabad and Mahbubnagar is taken into consideration to postpone it to later date

According to officials, the Sub-Committee comprised Finance Minister Eatala Rajender, Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao, Roads and Buildings Minister T Nageswara Rao, Agriculture Minister P Srinivas Reddy, Forest Minister Jogu Ramanna Energy Minister G Jagadeesh Reddy and Panchayat Raj Minister Jupally Krishna Rao. It has so far held three meetings to frame guidelines to implement the scheme.

The government, the officials said, is wary of distributing the sheep during summer because of possible migration of people from districts like Adilabad and Mahbubnagar. Apart from it, the scarcity of fodder too has prompted the government to decide to postpone the scheme to July.

Against this backdrop, a district-wise analysis of fodder availability has been made. The government has decided to roll out the scheme in July. The first phase of schemes will be implemented in those districts where there is no scarcity of fodder, the officials said. Plans are also afoot to promote cultivation and stockpile it to ensure it lasts the entire year.

The Animal Husbandry Department intends to promote sheep rearing similar to diary project. Shepherds graze sheep on common lands. “Shepherds spend about 12 hours each time. We want to see that they need not spend so much time for it. In that way we want to make the scheme attractive to rural youth,” an official pointed out.

The government has taken all precautions to ensure that sheep is procured without giving scope for draining of funds. The cautious approach is aimed at seeing that the middlemen do not increase the price of sheep. The officials have already identified the State where they will be buy sheep.
