Hyderabad: Almost for a decade Old city remains peaceful. But this part of Hyderabad is considered to be communally sensitive and many people still feel apprehensive of walking through extensive labyrinths of lanes and by-lanes.However, the situation is changing for the good.

Highlights:

  • Hyderabad Police Commissioner M Mahender Reddy says closed-circuit television cameras are connected to Command Control Centre and also police headquarters
  • ‘In times of emergency, the police can monitor the situation sitting in Command Control Centre and take a decision without losing time’
  • ‘They also help in zeroing in on suspects and arrest them’

Even as realisation has dawned on educated youths in the old city, the government’s efforts to modernise police force and the proactive steps taken by the city police is helping in ushering in a change. Those who have been feeling apprehensive of stepping into the by-lanes of Old city may now happily go round as every inch of the Old city is under the surveillance of CCTV cameras. This is official.

“Every inch of Old city is under the surveillance of CCTV cameras. We can monitor the movements of people, particularly during major events sitting in the Command Control Centre at the city police headquarters,” City Police Commissioner M Mahendar Reddy, told The Hans India.

Most people in the Old city may not be aware of the CCTV cameras working in their neighbourhood. But, the CCTV cameras have been installed with the support of the local communities, the city police chief said.In addition to these cameras installed by the communities as part of community CCTV project, government funded CCTV cameras are also being installed. Ones the installation is completed, the cameras will be of immense help for the police, he said.

“We use technology as a force multiplier. It reduces pressure on the manpower and helps in taking quick decisions in times of need,” Mahendar Reddy said. What is more interesting is that the city police is capable of running a photo analytics software behind the visuals captured by the CCTV cameras to recognise the movements of suspects and such persons will be zeroed in on them without creating any alarm, he said.

The CCTV cameras are connected not only to the Command Control Centre of the city police but also to the State Police Headquarters. Senior officials at the DGP office can monitor and issue instructions instantaneously. This way, decisions can be taken without losing time leading to improved efficiency, he said.
