Hyderabad: As part of the strategy to strengthen fisheries in the State, the government has proposed to seek assistance to the tune of Rs 1,000 crore from National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) during this year. This is in addition to the Rs 5,000 crore loan for sheep-rearing which the State government has sought from the NCDC.

The proposal was forwarded to the NCDC after the high-level meeting. The government aims to strengthen the fisheries in the State as part of promoting economic growth in the new State, according to official sources. The major focus areas of the State for expanding the sector include underpinning the chain for storing of fish seed in water bodies, seed farm development and fish production.

Besides this, for facilitating this supply chain, the government has involved the important elements like marketing projects, building of infrastructure and monitoring & capacity building in its proposal. Amongst these, the major portion has been proposed for procurement of 50,000 two-wheelers with vending machines to help society members sell their produce. Each vehicle would cost about Rs 50,000.

With Telangana having about 25,000 tanks, the Fisheries department also included a proposal of Rs 77.73 crore for facilitating storage for fish seeds. “The benefits including subsidy from the government would be provided to fishermen who are society members and who are part of federation,” officials told The Hans India.

Besides increasing the freshwater fish production, the government also aims at pushing for the production of prawns in lakes and reservoirs. It has proposed Rs 20 crore for increasing their numbers by storing juvenile prawns. The proposal includes coming up with about 30 fish market unions throughout the State at a cost of Rs 60 crores.

“The government hopes to establish freshwater fish seed hatcheries and also enclosure culture which would be helpful for increasing fish production in the State. We are studying the feasibility of earmarking maximum funds for this,” added the official.
