Noted Dalit leader and former Deputy Prime Minister Dr Babu Jagjivan Ram’s 110th birth anniversary celebrations underline the need to uplift the downtrodden

Participating as the chief guest in the meeting organised at the LB Stadium by the State SC Development Department on Wednesday on the occasion of Dr Babu Jagjivan Ram’s 110th birth anniversary celebrations, Praveen Kumar said development would be possible only with education.

He, who strived to earn money while having education, said that he was today in a higher position and was now spending Rs 1 lakh for the development of SC students in the State every month.

He said from March 15 to April 14, the SC Residential Schools would observe ‘holy month’ by celebrating the birth anniversaries of Dalit leaders Kanshiram, Babu Jagjivan Ram, Baburao Phule, Savitri Phule, Dr BR Ambedkar and others. He said the students would get up at 5 am and read the books written by those great Dalit leaders and tell good things to others.

He said the Telangana State government was contemplating to launch 15,000 residential schools to the SC, ST, BC and minorities’ children across the State which was a unique step. The government would spend Rs 1 lakh per year on every student pursuing their education in those residential schools. He suggested SC, ST, BC and minorities to utilise the opportunity provided by the State government.

Power and SC Development Minister G Jagdeesh Reddy paid floral tributes to Dr Babu Jagjivan Ram statue at LB Stadium. Speaking on the occasion, he said that Jagjivan Ram strived relentlessly for the protection of Dalit rights. He praised the services of the Jagjivan Ram as the Deputy Prime Minister.

State BJP chief Dr K Laxman, BJP MLC Ramchander Rao, MLA Ramchandra Reddy, TDP State chief LV Ramana, Mothkupally Narsimhulu, GHMC Commissioner Dr Janardhan Redy, former chief secretary Kaki Madhava Rao and others participated in the programme.

Meanwhile, Minister for Irrigation T Harish Rao offered floral tributes to Babu Jagjivan Ram at Siddipet MPDO office.
After paying rich tributes to the Dalit icon and former Deputy Prime Minister, Harish Rao said Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao brought in a new Act for Dalit development like no other State did in India.

Special development fund was being offered by the government for SCs and funds remained unspent would be carried forward to next year avoiding wastage or lapse, the Minister noted.Harish also recalled the services of Jagjivan Ram, who strived hard for the cause of Dalits and tribals. The Chief Minister had special focus on the welfare of Scheduled Castes and Tribes and was offering Rs 20 lakh grant towards foreign education, he said.
