Hanamkonda: Albeit Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu spent just around 20 minutes here on Friday, it was like a much-needed tonic for the Telugu Desam cadres who flocked to see him. Naidu was here to attend the marriage of one of his trusted lieutenants in Telangana Telugu Desam Danasari Anasuya alias Sitakka’s son, Surya.

The situation was tense when he visited the city last time (post-Telangana formation) on February 12, 2015 with MRPS activists allegedly set ablaze the furniture of the TDP office and the dais at the public meeting where Naidu was supposed to address. However, this time around there was no such protests, but for the flutter created by a party activist who tried to immolate himself when he was denied permission to meet his party chief.

Although Palakurthy MLA Errabelli Dayakar Rao and former Rajya Sabha member Gundu Sudha Rani attended the marriage, they were not present when Naidu blessed the couple. While Errabelli visited the venue before Naidu’s arrival, Sudha Rani appeared after Naidu left the venue. It may be noted here that both the leaders defected to the ruling TRS from the TDP. Right through his short stay, Naidu, sporting a huge smile, appeared in good spirits greeting his cadres and allowing girls to take selfies.

Apart from Naidu, a galaxy of leaders – Revanth Reddy, L Ramana, Garikapati Mohan Rao, Mothkupalli Narsimhulu, Nama Nageswara Rao (from TDP), Ponnala Laxmaiah, Gandra Venkata Ramana Reddy, Errabelli Swarna (from Congress), M Dharma Rao, Edla Ashok Reddy and Rao Padma Reddy (from BJP) blessed the couple – Surya and Kusumanjali.

The list of invitees included a group of saints deputed by Chinna Jeeyar Swamy to bless the couple. While Naidu was leaving the venue, Arsham Swamy, a TDP activist, tried to immolate himself by dousing with petrol. However, the police stopped him and took him away. It’s learnt that Swamy ran out of finances after his wife Rani unsuccessfully contested from the 12th Division in the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation elections last year on TDP ticket.

He wanted to meet Naidu to seek financial support, it’s learnt. Earlier, Naidu who came by chopper was received by the Warangal Urban District Collector Amrapali Kata and Commissioner of Police G Sudheer Babu at the Arts College Grounds.
