Hyderabad: No new cellars will be permitted in the core city areas of the city which are densely populated and have buildings close to each other.

According to GHMC officials, the civic body will be amending the building rules within a week to bring into effect the new rules. The decision has been taken in view of certain unfortunate incidents that had taken place in the city claiming several lives.

It may be recalled that two women construction workers were killed while four labourers were injured after an under-construction cellar near the Google office in Madhapur caved in last month. He cited that the incident took place as the builder did not leave specified space between the two structures.

The civic body is now planning to allow cellars up to three levels for the high-rise structures constructed in vast vacant lands in city outskirts. The officials said the civic body is framing rules in such way that geo-technical expert should be compulsorily present at the construction site in order to monitor the safety measures.

This decision has been taken after consultations with experts at a meeting held last month at the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI).

The GHMC official said that the corporation will give permission for cellars only for the structures constructed in larger vacant lands, where there would be no structures in at least 500 metres radius.

He said that the corporation would give permission for cellars only up to three levels. He also said that GHMC has already relaxed building rules in order to encourage stilt for all future constructions.

He said that the GHMC would conduct awareness campaigns in this regard.
