Hyderabad: The Road Transport Authority (RTA) is set to come up with a new rule wherein Registration Certificate (RC) would not be issued to new vehicles unless high security number plate is fixed to the vehicle. The RTA officials told The Hans India that the craze for fancy number plates in the State was so high that the owners, when they buy the vehicle, pay the prescribed fee for high security number plate, but do not fix plates.

The RC, as per the existing practice, is sent to the owner by speed post. Upon getting the certificate, some vehicle owners go to private number plate manufacturers to buy fancy number plates, they added.According to a senior official, owners will now have to collect the RC from the RTA office by providing identification proof. After number plate is fixed, a High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) representative would give certificate and then only the RC would be issued.

The government gave the task of fixing of HSRP to Utsav Safety Systems and Link Point Infrastructure consortium in the State during undivided Andhra Pradesh in December 2013. The government fixed the fee at Rs 245 for two-wheelers, Rs 282 for three-wheelers and Rs 619 for four-wheelers and Rs 649 for heavy motor vehicles. Officials, during a review meeting, brought this to the notice of Transport Minister P Mahender Reddy.

Sources said the Minister suggested that the RC be issued only after fixing of number plate and it was then decided to amend the rules. According to official, the new rule will first be enforced at Khairatabad RTA and soon it will be implemented throughout the State.
