Hyderabad: The Lake Protection Committee (LPC) comprising Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) and Irrigation Department officials, have allegedly manipulated the full tank level (FTL) of Neknampur Cheruvu and Ibrahim Cheruvu. The information to this effect has been obtained through Right To Information (RTI) Act.

According to the RTI information sought by NGO 'Save Our Urban Lakes' (SOUL), the Ibrahim Cheruvu is under GHMC jurisdiction and Neknampur Cheruvu is under HMDA jurisdiction. However, the HMDA officials had fenced the lakes and marked both Neknampur cheruvu and Ibrahim Cheruvu as one lake and named it as Pedda Cheruvu.

According to the report, the water spread areas of Pedda Cheruvu was 77 acres, FTL level was 97.830 acres, water level +518.300 metres, full tank level +517.745 metres, metres, full tank level perimeter 5120 metres and bund length 1425 metres. SOUL Co-Convener Lubna Sarwath said Ibrahim Cheruvu was under GHMC and Neknampur Cheruvu was under HMDA, but the map showed that both the lakes have single FTL boundary.

She said both HMDA and GHMC had shown the two lakes as it is one lake only. Interestingly, she said, Neknampur Lake has been earmarked for development under the mission Kakatiya. “When we enquired about both the lakes at Survey of India it shows that they are two different lakes, we have sent many complaints but no action has been taken so far,” said Lubna.

When queried about it , Lake Protection committee member from GHMC, however ,said they were not two different lakes. It is one Pedda Cheruvu. He further said the lake is under the jurisdiction of HMDA and the downstream area of the lake is under GHMC. On contrary, Madhulika S Choudary, a professor of computer engineering, who has been leading the lake rejuvenation project said that earlier it was one lake but the recently they were divided into two - Neknampur and Ibrahim Cheruvu.

She also said that the LPC was yet to fence the both lakes. But the HMDA official said both Ibrahim Cheruvu and Neknampur Cheruvu is one single lake. The HMDA has carried out the fencing and now the lake has been handed over to the GHMC for purification, he added.
